Since my move to Asheville, I have been painting nearly every day. Starting out small again is sort of rough, but I am SO honored to have even the wonderful coffee shops around here asking me to grace their walls with my artwork. Right now, I have a bunch of artwork, shrinky dink brooches, and small prints available at Tod's Tasties off Montford St. They have amazing baristas and funny cooks, and you never know what kind of music you'll be walking into! Yesterday I went to go pick up money from print sales and they were playing RUN DMC.
There food is amazing. Get the corn dog! With a side salad! So good.

I may may may be putting my stuff up in the downtown Izzy's coffee den on Lexington Ave! That would be neat, since it's so close to so many wonderful shops, and they ALSO have amazing coffee.

AND...

...thanks to my unofficial manager who (in her words) "slings my shit like a drug dealer," I might have my stuff up at Bari Salon when they open! I always drive by them on Haywood Rd. and wonder when they'll open. They look so kitschy and fun, something I need to be a part of!

Ferrero Rocher Cupcakes

Today has been so wonderful. I woke up around 11 and my boyfriend had come home from his first shift at work. We both wanted coffee and he had told me about this place downtown that made "coma inducing hot chocolate."

It's called the French Broad Chocolate Lounge, and it's off Lexington in downtown Asheville. I am still new to the area so I'm sure this is a treasured gem to everyone here in the know.

We get there, and it's this small storefront. Inside, it's not decorated as anything crazy. Might be a good place to work on your laptop or read a good book.
Off the bat, they are selling some amazing chocolates. I have always admired the Mast Brothers chocolate, but had never tried it and to my luck The Chocolate Lounge was selling a slew of it!
I of course picked the Almond and Sea Salt, and how could I not, look at this packaging..

I know! Adorable. We got a chocolate and pistachio covered shortbread that was perfectly buttery and just melted in your mouth, a cup of the "liquid truffle" in Buddha (which was their signature hot chocolate with Coconut Milk....oh mah gadfkfh), and for myself a hot latte and for Robert an iced latte. Perfectly delicous!!!

Me and Robert spied a picture of some Ferrero Rocher cupcakes and he looked like a kid in a candy shop when he saw them, so the cogs had already started turning in my head about how I could make them. He dropped me off at home so he could go to his second shift and I immediately ran to the grocery store....without looking at recipes (D'OH!)
I know I know, I have an iphone, I could have googled it but I thought it would be funner to wing it, so heres MY recipe!

For the cupcake:
1 pkg. moist chocolate cake mix
1/2 small jar of nutella
1 package of any kind of chocolate covered wafers
(this could be kit kats, fudge wafers, peanut butter wafers....whatever you desire!)
24 ferrero rocher chocolates, chopped in food processor or smashed in a ziplock baggie!

For the topping (ganache)
8 oz. heavy whipping cream
8 oz. semi-sweet chocolate, chopped finely
1/2 small jar nutella

Prepare to bake your cupcakes (I find adding an extra egg to the recipe makes it richer), but before placing them into the oven, place 1/4 of the wafer bar into the center of the cupcake.

Remove your cupcakes from the baking tray and place them on a cooling rack. Allow to COMPLETELY cool.

For the Ganache

Heat your heavy whipping cream in a small saucepan until it simmers, and let it simmer for about 3 minutes. Don't let it get all bubbly or foamy! Pour the heated cream over a bowl of the finely chopped semi-sweet chocolate and nutella. Allow it to sit for about two minutes, then patiently stir until it becomes a glossy, rich cream.

Take your cupcake with the wafer in the center and dip just the top into the ganache. Let the excess drip back into the bowl. Place on cooling rack again and let freshly frosted cupcakes sit for about 10 minutes.

Sprinkle your crushed Ferrero Rocher chocolates on top and VOILA!

So so so yummy. Recipe yields 24 delicious cupcakes!

SO! This always happens to me. Does this happen to anyone else? Anyone?

So, I move here to Asheville and I am *gasp* unemployed. I can't remember the last time in my life I was....unemployed. That word alone makes me feel like I have to go in desperation mode and start saving my pennies for dinner. Ok, I tend to over exagerate.

Anyways, my job situation has finally panned out! I'll be working at the coffee shop at UNCA and I'll be doing freelance and a bit of inhouse design for a local print shop!

Hooray! So if anyone was wondering if I'm doing ok,
I think I can say that I am doing pretty great.

Also, there is more coffee here than you can shake a stick at. So much of it. I am in heaven.

Been venturing into gouache a little bit. Acrylic has been good to me but I need something washier that I can get finer lines with. Gouache seems to be the answer! And honestly....the materials are cheaper and seeing how I am in a new state with like...no money, THAT is pretty convenient :)

Well, I'm officially in Asheville, NC. It's been pretty steady as far as getting settled in, looking for work, meeting people, etc. We're pretty much all unpacked except for the fact that we DESPERATELY need book cases and shelves. I've been walking around down town almost every single day, bobbing in and out of restaurants, bookstores, coffee shops and the like seeking employment. I've got a temporary design job right now at a copy shop (gag) but I have what seems like a pretty promising interview tomorrow.

I have so much I want to do, so many letters I want to write. So many things I want to get for people. SO MANY THINGS I NEED FOR THE HOUSE!

Robert has been the most amazing person ever. I can't imagine what kind of mess I'd be in without him.

The upside to unemployment is that I've been able to sit and draw and paint more! Right now since I'm new in town, I figured it'd be smart to maybe submit my paintings to a local coffeeshop. Maybe try and get some things sold, maybe get my name out. Right now I'm working on a handfull of small coffee-stained paintings.

Hopefully my next post will prove that I've been even more productive and things have come a little further! Keep your fingers crossed for me!

I always have these thoughts in my head before bed. I always stay up late rummaging through them like I'm reorganizing the contents of the footlocker at the end of my bed. I've had a lot of organic materials and shapes on my mind and when I finally DO fall asleep, I have all sorts of things in my dreams that reflect that. In my dream last night I had this wooden necklace that was chevron shaped and it had a pattern of lace on it. Lace is an organic pattern right? I mean, it does sort of mimic what a spiders web is, right? Anyways, so I scoured etsy looking for something like it because I am interested in playing around with some painted lace patterned wood block earrings or something, and I ran into

PUGAPALOOZA 2011

So, if you know me you know my obsession with Pugs. I long for one. They have SO much personality and have their moments of independence and their moments of "oh please I just want to cuddle".....just like me! Their little smooshed faces are just about the most adorable thing ever to be, and they are so quirky and fun. So yeah, I don't have a pug...YET. BUT! I got to go to Pugapalooza in Norfolk, VA with my friend Lizzle and my cousin ALLEY! People kept asking us where our dogs were, and I felt like the child molester hanging out at the kids playground.

"Ehhh...I don't have a pug?? YET??!"

Everyone was so super duper nice though!

There was a costume contest. ( I squeeled)

There was a Oldest and Youngest contest (I screeched at the little puppy and the frumpy old man pug)

There was a pug race! A curliest tail contest!

I tell you, it was heaven.

Cure Coffeehouse Chalkboards!

So, I've been working as a Barista as Cure Coffeehouse in Freemason (which is an amazing other-worldy neighborhood in Norfolk, Virginia) and I pretty much got the gig because the owner (who so happened to be a guy I went to HIGHSCHOOL with) liked my handwriting and wanted me to write their boards. So, in my typical fashion, I show up and demand a job there(just kidding, I didn't demand! But....I did get the job!)
So after a week or two they got an A-Frame chalkboard sign for outside so i can doodle on it. I don't think they realize how much artistic freedom I've given' myself. Either way, *most* of the customers like it.
MOST. heh heh.
But these are all in good fun, and I'll be sad when I move to Asheville, NC in about a month and leave them :(

I am blown away by this mans work. France based tattoo artist that goes by "Guy Le Tattooer" has an exhibit at Gimple & Muller gallery in France. These are amazing, and yes it was done with electric machines. Silicon arms cast from the artists own appendages.

The winters here are strange in the way that you cannot have one plus side of winter without having a crappy part of it as well. When we get snow, it's WET snow. The snow that seeps into your shoes and makes your feet wet and icky. This is what I'm telling myself to justify buying these.

It's nearing that time...

I will be making numerous Halloween themed posts for the next few months, because this is my FAVORITE time of the year. Otherwise known as "Samhain", Halloween is the time of year when the atmosphere becomes thin, and is susceptible to spirits passing through that thin membrane. Some spirits such as those celebrated or family members are welcome while other evil spirits are warded off. I have been disappointed with our generations fascination with this holiday in recent years. I think their focus is completely off. This is not a holiday to wear the sluttiest spandex catsuit you can find, or spank your other female friends with your cheap hollow plastic police baton. This year, I hope everyone focus's on the MAGICAL part of Halloween. The spark was in your heart when you were young. For some of us, that fire burns brighter than it ever has. For others, the fire went out that first year the October chill nipped you when you wore that skimpy bathing suit that was a sad excuse for a wonder woman costume. Think of the smell of fresh baked PUMPKIN SEEDS (MMMM), the smell of crisp apple cider, the smell of neighborhood bonfires, that oddly self-satisfying sound of crunching leaves under your boots, a child-like fascination with decorating your home with streamers, pumpkins, and bunting, your face always feeling taut and your makeup and hair fully cooperating with the weather. Let us not forget, it IS sweater weather. I've not yet figured out exactly what I'm going to be for Halloween, but I found a really cute Sailor costume at my work. It's not slutty, its ADORABLE. So, I was fortunate enough to be involved in a trade with the super talented red-headed extroidenaire LeslieBot! She is an "Illustrator, Caricaturist, Craftster, Knitter, Zinester and all around cool chick."

Definatly a cool lady for sure! So here is my batch of goodies from Miss Leslie:
WOO! An AMAZING gouache painting of a swimmer lady holding a flying fish (!!!), a mini zine titled "Belly Button" which is CUTE AS A BUTTON and another mini zine titled "I Like" which, obviously, I like...A postcard print of her cutie-patootie baboon illustration, a button with a birdy, and a page from an old old book about minerals with a BEAUTIFUL opal on it!! So yes, I am enamored with my collection of wonderfuls from miss Leslie! I'm nearing the time of sending mine out to her, but here's a peek at the painting. It's 13.5" x 5.5" acrylic on wood plaque. I'm also sending her other goodies but I'll get a picture of it from her when she receives it!!

Circus Bears

A few friends and myself were talking about circus animals the other day, and I have had circus bears on the mind since then! I found this really neat pool of photos on flickr of russian circus bears. The pictures kind of make me sad, but also make me want to squeeze these bears like stuffed animals with a hulk-like hug action. Anyways. I was inspired to paint a circus bear. It's acrylic on a found plaque, approx. 7" by 5". I've included the preliminary sketch which I almost like better than the painting!!
